Watercolor Eggs, A Color Mixing Activity

Image
This weekend we painted wooden eggs with liquid watercolors.  The girls mixed their own shades using the primary colors.  Once dry, we coated them with a bit of beeswax.  It was a simple, easy, fun craft that came out to be a sweet decoration.  The eggs are proudly displayed in the living room to explore.

Gingerbread, Sand, and Holiday Sets Basket

Image
Please visit Mommy Moment, for a view of our Holiday Sets Basket !  It's been a daily favorite :) This week, we made Gingerbread Play Dough.  I got the idea from Pinterest, but changed it to the spices that we love most.  We also ground each spice by hand.  The girls did all the measuring and mixing.  They packed some for their classrooms, since the twins are in the middle of a Jan Brett unit at school.  Today they read Gingerbread Baby.  Tis the season! Bean, age 5.5 reads her new book to Peanut, age 3.5 at bedtime.  Bean is really into being the big sister, and takes her job very seriously.  Especially where books are involved.   Mortar and Pestle for Clove & Nutmeg Grinding Counting and Grinding Whole Cloves Great Gingerbread Playdough Recipe  from Pinterest Our first batch!  It smells like a dream. Busy hands and cooperation Peanut is beaming with pride here. ...

Montessori Monday: Picky Eater Giveaway & Our Work at Home

I have been reviewing book lately, and my most recent review was for Elizabeth Pantley , of the great No-Cry Solution parenting books.  She kindly sent me an extra copy to share with one of my blog readers.  Simply comment below and follow this blog on either Facebook, Twitter, or Google Friend Connect to enter.  Each daily comment will be counted in the random drawing, scheduled on Sunday, October 31 at 8pm.  The book is amazing, and it has some healthy recipes for children to create--- think Food Prep, Montessorians!  For more interest on the book, The No-Cry Picky Eater Solution , see my recent review here . And onto my little ones... This week was back to normal, back to health-  full of good work and constant art.  We have a variety of art materials available at any time, for any purpose.  It has become a place of retreat, our little den full of child treasures.  With a few rainy days, we found ourselves snuggling, reading a ton ...

Montessori Monday: A Week of Rest (and work!)

Image
This week, our little ones took turns staying home from school due to croup. There were many pajama days and trips to the doctor, but we still got some work in (I guess that's the joy of having cool stuff to do right at home!). Bean is spelling with the Movable Alphabet and Objects independently now! She's allowing her sisters to pick her next objects.  They caught me taking the photo :) Metal Inset Work, turning into PUMPKINS! Pumpkin is punching out a circle from the metal insets to make a pumpkin!   Pumpkin Punching in progress.... More pumpkin punching... 3 Little Jack-o-lanterns over the books! Some Pink Tower & Brown Stair Extensions I see you, Bean! This post is proudly linked to:

It's all about COLOR

Image
She's aware that she's funny....she found her favorite color!  What a goof, it's a good thing I allow exploration of all kinds (within reason).  She cracks herself up. What a ham....ready for a color box lesson! Twins in action, matching color box 2. Bean explores with her new markers. Bean does color box 3 Hurricane spin art,  on display (was a Melisssa & Doug kit, used just before Irene!)

Glue Batik- Outdoor Open Art

Image
Last weekend the girls and I were so very busy!  We were deep into a 3 step project, and boy it was fun. First, we used blue Elmers glue to decorate a white sheet (any white cloth will work, even tshirts).  White glue does not work as well, make sure to use blue.   Once it really dry, say 12 hours or overnight, its time to paint! We used 50/50 water and acrylic paints.  It took a while to wash off, even in a pool.  Hey, it's worth it. Wash the glue off by soaking it in warm/hot water for a few hours.  I actually ran mine in the washing machine, which saved me a ton of time.  Now that they are dry, I may just make our playroom some curtains!

Marathon Work Time

Image
I'm not sure how it happened, but today was on and off rainy and my girls spent 5 total hours working.  FIVE!  They have been working for up to three straight hours, but today blew my socks off.  I hung close by, reading quietly and helping when needed, but they were pretty independent.  They stopped for snacks, which they got for themselves, and came right back to work.  They worked together so well, and even made new activities with paints and sandpaper letters.  They used finger paints to cover a page, then used a finger to draw letters and numbers.  Bean spent a lot of time showing them just how, and the twins followed blindly.  It was really sweet.  I only took one photo, but we were busy with sandpaper letters, the sand tray, knobless cylinders, spindle boxes, initial sound objects,  practical life/physical skills, and movable alphabet for pink series words.  I overheard Bean say to Pumpkin and Peanut, "This is preschool AND k...

Independence Day Bounce Ball Painting & Flower Arranging

Image
We are very into open ended art, so I gave them bounce balls instead of paintbrushes, and handfuls of glitter. It was messy, but we jumped into the kiddie pool afterwards.... The girls loved that their crazy backyard art day (we call it anything but a brush) helped decorate the kitchen for the 4th! They even did a little red, white and blue floral arranging.
